Promotions and ranks are designed to show how much experience a member has in the hobby, be it temporally or knowledge-based. Therefore, qualification for a promotion will not be based on a concrete eligibility structure, and will be left solely to the decisions made by command. Should a position open, the unit commander will designate the most qualified person to fill that position, though the member is not obliged to accept any award or promotion simply because it is offered. Members are also eligible for promotion of one step if they recruit three new members into the unit in a span of one year.
Eligibility and Award Timeframes
Members, if eligible, will receive no more than one promotion in each calendar year. Should a member receive an award, he may also choose to “trade” that award for an increase in rank, if there is a position available, with the unit commander’s approval. Any awards or promotions for which members become eligible will be officially awarded once per calendar year at the unit’s end of year Bertchesgaden event.
Purchasing Rank Insignia
Should a member be authorized by the unit command to take a rank promotion, it is that member’s responsibility to acquire necessary collar tabs, shoulder boards, and sleeve devices. Command will not provide these or any other items for an individual’s impression. Unit members are encouraged to ask others in the group first, as many people have old or spare insignia sets they may be willing to part with for a lower price than a newly purchased item.
Permanence of Rank
It is also important to note that rank, once awarded, is not yours permanently. If your behavior or event attendance is no longer up to the standards of your post, rank can be taken away and bestowed upon a more deserving candidate best serving the needs of the unit. Rank may be taken away on a permanent or probationary period, depending on the reason for its removal. Never get comfortable in your place, and always endeavor to serve the unit to the best of your ability.
